Was is a Drum Major?

The drum major leads the pipes and drums and gives the musicians the commands relating to the march and the music. He conducts the marching formation, so to speak, either with his "mace" or with his right hand.

In the British Army, the function of drum major was first introduced in the drum corps in 1650. Trumpeters, pipers and drummers were not musicians in that sense but transmitters of instructions and orders. The "drums and pipes" were commanded by a drum major who watched over their military discipline, trained them in their function and had to defend them in the field.

With the advent of military concert orchestras in the 18th century, the position of drum major was incorporated into the music service. Drum majors are trained at appropriate academies. Drum majors usually develop their own style with which they shape the appearance of a band.

Drum majors are used in marching bands around the world, in military and high school bands, and especially in pipe bands. Because of their special position, they wear a uniform with much more elaborate regalia and effects.
